What the data show
The NBS figures suggest that higher transport costs are not limited to road travel.
Average air fares for selected routes and single journeys climbed to ₦131,557.53 in October 2025, up 1.32 per cent from September and 4.17 per cent compared with a year earlier.
Motorcycle commuters paid an average of ₦780.00, reflecting a 5.74% monthly increase and a steep 45.53 per cent year-on-year rise.
Water transport fares also increased, with the average fare reaching ₦1,851.28, up 3.11 per cent month-on-month and 25.25 per cent year-on-year.
Oyo State posted the highest average intercity bus fare at ₦10,200.19, while Kwara State recorded the lowest at ₦6,059.65.
Lagos recorded the highest average intra-city bus fare at ₦1,405.85, while Abia had the lowest at ₦548.44.
In air travel, Rivers State topped the list with fares averaging ₦155,750.59, compared with Ebonyi, which recorded the lowest at ₦125,990.65.
Regionally, the South-West had the highest fares for intra-city buses (₦1,152.63), intercity buses (₦8,770.49), and air travel (₦133,561.61).
The South-South led in water transport costs at ₦4,462.32, while the North-East recorded the lowest average water fare at ₦1,079.15.
The NBS data indicate that transportation costs continue to be a significant driver of household spending and inflation in Nigeria.
Ongoing fare increases across various transport modes squeeze disposable income and raise business expenses, especially for workers and small enterprises that depend on daily commuting.
