Tinubu approves one-year extension for Customs boss

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, to allow him consolidate ongoing reforms and complete key initiatives.

The extension was announced in a statement issued on July 31, 2025, by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.

According to the statement, “The Presidency announces that the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, which is due to expire on August 31, 2025, has been extended by one year.”

The ongoing reforms Adeniyi is expected to consolidate include:

Modernising the Nigeria Customs Service; Implementing the National Single Window Project; Fulfilling Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement.

Onanuga emphasized that President Tinubu acknowledges Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and dedication to service.

He noted that the President is confident the extension will further empower the Nigeria Customs Service to deliver on its core mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.

It will be recalled that in October 2023, President Bola Tinubu approved the confirmation of Adewale Adeniyi as the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Friday, October 20, 2023, by Willie Bassey, Director of Information in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, who stated that the appointment took effect from October 19, 2023.

The confirmation came nearly four months after President Tinubu appointed Adeniyi as Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service.
