Tinubu appoints Lamido Yuguda CBN deputy governor

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Lamido Abubakar Yuguda, former Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The appointment was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, adding that the appointment is subject to confirmation by the Senate.

Onanuga noted that the nomination complies with Section 8(1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which requires the CBN governor and deputy governors to possess relevant financial experience.

According to Onanuga, the nomination of Yuguda followed the recent appointment of the former Deputy Governor, Bala Bello, as Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Political Economy.

The president tasked both officials with carrying out their duties with renewed dedication and professionalism.

The presidency also urged Yuguda to demonstrate strong commitment to Nigeria’s economic stability and growth in his new role at the Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to the Presidency, Yuguda last served as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, a position he held from 2020 to 2024.

He earned a B.Sc. in Accountancy from Ahmadu Bello University in 1983.

In 1991, Lamido Yuguda earned a master’s degree in Money, Banking and Finance from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

A Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and a CFA charterholder of the CFA Institute, Yuguda began his career in 1984 at the Central Bank of Nigeria as a Senior Supervisor in the Foreign Operations Department.

He later served as an economist in the Africa Department of the International Monetary Fund from 1997 to 2001, before returning to the CBN.

In 2020, the Senate confirmed the appointment of Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The development was disclosed at the time by Bashir Ahmad, Personal Assistant on New Media to former President Muhammadu Buhari, via his Twitter handle.
