TikTok to update community guidelines with new rules

TikTok launches campus verification to help students connect

TikTok will roll out an update to its Community Guidelines on September 13, 2025, introducing new policies for creators and refining the platform’s approach to personalization, commercial content, and AI-generated media.

While much of the revision simplifies existing language, several changes stand out. Notably, TikTok has tightened its rules for TikTok LIVE creators.

Hosts are now explicitly held responsible for anything that occurs during their broadcasts, including activity from third-party tools such as real-time translation or text-to-speech services. The company warns that creators must monitor these tools to ensure compliance with platform standards.

Commercial content rules have also been updated. TikTok emphasizes that promotional material must be disclosed, and it will reduce the visibility of posts directing users to purchase items outside TikTok Shop in regions where the marketplace is available.

The platform is also expanding its ability to tailor experiences to individual users. Search results, recommendations, and even comment sections will now vary between users, based on signals such as past searches, video views, replies, likes, and reports. Previously, guidelines only mentioned personalized “search suggestions.”

In terms of AI-generated content, TikTok has streamlined its wording. Earlier prohibitions against deepfakes depicting public figures in endorsements or crisis events have been replaced with a broader ban on content that is “misleading about matters of public importance or harmful to individuals.” The change has raised speculation about whether TikTok is leaving room for celebrity-approved AI endorsements.

Other updates include changes to the For You Feed eligibility standards, which no longer list disallowed content in one place but instead distribute the rules across multiple sections.

TikTok also altered its explanation of content moderation, shifting its focus from keeping the platform “safe, trustworthy, and vibrant” to maintaining a “safe, fun, and creative place for everyone.”
