TikTok is reportedly developing a new version of its app specifically for users in the United States, in anticipation of a potential sale to a consortium of American investors.
The Information disclosed on Sunday, that the move is aimed at complying with U.S. regulatory demands and avoiding a ban.
The development comes as U.S. President Donald Trump said he would begin discussions with China early this week concerning the future of TikTok’s U.S. operations. Trump added that the U.S. “pretty much” has a deal in place for the sale of the short-video platform.
TikTok has outlined plans to roll out the new version of its app to U.S. app stores by September 5, the report said. Eventually, users will be required to download this version to continue accessing the service. The current app will remain functional until March 2026, although this timeline could shift.
Last month, Trump extended the deadline for ByteDance — the China-based parent company of TikTok — to divest its U.S. assets to September 17. A previous attempt to spin off TikTok’s U.S. unit into a standalone, American-controlled company stalled after China signaled disapproval, particularly in light of new U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods.
Any deal will likely require approval from both U.S. and Chinese authorities, adding layers of complexity to an already delicate geopolitical situation.
