TikTok launches feature for quality sleep amid lawsuits

In a move aimed at promoting mental well-being and healthier screen habits, TikTok has officially launched in-app guided meditation exercises, the company announced Thursday.

The feature, which had been in testing with a select group of teenage users earlier this year, is now rolling out to all users globally.

The meditation tool is designed to encourage users—particularly teens—to get better sleep and cut back on late-night scrolling. For users under the age of 18, the feature is enabled by default. If a teen is still active on the app after 10 p.m., their For You feed will be paused and replaced with a guided meditation session. The session includes a calming screen, soothing music, and breathing exercises designed to help them wind down for the night.

If a teen dismisses the prompt and continues using the app, a second full-screen reminder will appear, nudging them to log off and get some rest.

This initiative is part of TikTok’s broader efforts to address concerns about the platform’s impact on young users. Over the past few years, the company has steadily introduced new safety and wellness features targeting teens. The new meditation function is seen as the latest attempt to satisfy growing scrutiny from parents and lawmakers.

Adult users can also access the feature by enabling the “sleep hours” option in TikTok’s Screen Time settings, allowing them to choose a specific time each night to receive the guided meditation prompt.

This comes as the parent company of TikTok, Bytedance battles European Union’s Digital Service Act fine which exposes the company to  fine of up to 6% of its global revenue.
