TikTok is introducing a set of new digital well-being features designed to enhance the mental health of its users, including an affirmation journal and a background sound generator.
The social network will also be implementing a system to give users badges for effectively managing their time on the platform.
The company has redesigned its screen time management page, incorporating several new elements. These additions feature an affirmation journal that offers more than 120 positive prompts to help users “set your intent for the day,” a sound generator capable of playing soothing sounds such as “rain or ocean waves,” and a dedicated module for breathing exercises. “The company said that the page will also feature content from creators who talk about limiting screen time, using parental tools, and customizing their feeds.”
In a new development, TikTok is rolling out badges intended to recognize users, particularly teenagers, who maintain moderate platform usage. “The company said it reviewed academic literature on digital well-being and found that overly restrictive tools can have a negative effect on teens.”
Users can earn these well-being badges by successfully completing various missions. One mission, related to sleep hours, requires users to abstain from using the platform during nighttime.
Another path to earning a badge involves utilizing the newly introduced meditation tools. TikTok will also grant a badge to individuals who establish a daily screen time limit and consistently use the app “within those bounds.”
Furthermore, badges are available for viewing the weekly screen time report and for encouraging others to participate in these missions.
“The company said that during its early testing, it observed that more people visited the new well-being screen compared to the previous version of the screen time menu, with the affirmation journal being the most popular tool.”
TikTok has stated that a direct link to these new tools “will display a link to these tools when someone is using the app at night or when they hit their daily screen time limit.”
The introduction of these features follows the company’s previous release of parental control tools in July, which provided guardians with the ability to block specific accounts and receive notifications when a teen uploads a public video or story. This move aligns with recent trends, as “In the past month, tech companies including Meta, YouTube, OpenAI, and Discord, have added new safety tools with an aim to increase teen safety.”
