TikTok deal talks with China to begin next week - Trump

United States President Donald Trump said on Friday that discussions with China over a potential deal involving the popular short-video app TikTok will begin early next week.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the United States “pretty much” has a deal in place regarding the sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations, and expects talks with Chinese officials—possibly President Xi Jinping or his representatives—to start by Monday or Tuesday.

“I think we’re gonna start Monday or Tuesday… talking to China, perhaps President Xi or one of his representatives, but we pretty much have a deal,” Trump said.

The app’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, has been under pressure to divest its U.S. assets following national security concerns raised by the Trump administration. Last month, Trump extended the deadline for ByteDance to complete the divestment to September 17.

Earlier this year, negotiations had been underway to spin off TikTok’s U.S. operations into a new, U.S.-based entity majority-owned by American investors. However, progress stalled after China signaled its opposition to the plan, particularly in response to Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on Chinese goods.

Trump acknowledged that the deal would likely need approval from Chinese authorities. When asked about the likelihood of China agreeing, he responded, “I’m not confident, but I think so. President Xi and I have a great relationship, and I think it’s good for them. I think the deal is good for China and it’s good for us.”

The TikTok saga remains one of several flashpoints in the ongoing trade and tech tensions between Washington and Beijing.
