Temu, the international e-commerce platform, on Tuesday addressed an ongoing probe by Nigeria’s data protection authority, affirming its commitment to protecting users’ personal information and cooperating with regulators to resolve concerns over its data practices.
The statement comes after the Nigeria Data Protection Commission announced an investigation into Temu for possible violations of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, focusing on how the platform collects, processes, stores, and transfers Nigerians’ personal data.
Temu emphasized that safeguarding user privacy and maintaining data security are core priorities of its operations.
“At Temu, protecting user privacy and data security is a top priority. We are committed to complying with applicable laws and regulations in our data practices,” the company said in an email, according to The Punch.
The company also stated that it will stay in regular contact with the Nigerian regulator as the investigation progresses.
“We will continue to engage in open and constructive dialogue with the NDPC to address any questions or concerns,” Temu added.
The NDPC previously revealed that it launched the probe after detecting possible concerns with the platform’s data processing practices.
The commission said the investigation is examining critical areas, including data minimization, duty of care, transparency requirements, and the cross-border transfer of personal information.
The regulator further cautioned that organizations handling Nigerians’ personal data without adhering to the country’s data protection law may face enforcement measures, including fines.
Temu, which launched in Nigeria in late 2024, has quickly grown in popularity thanks to its low-priced products, aggressive marketing, and mobile-focused shopping approach. The platform is believed to have attracted millions of Nigerian users in a short time, prompting regulatory scrutiny over the management of large volumes of consumer data.
