Popular instant messaging platform founded by Pavel Durov, Telegram, has announced a major financial milestone, declaring profitability with revenue surpassing $1 billion in 2024.
The app, which introduced its premium subscription service in 2022, now boasts 12 million paid subscribers.
Durov revealed on Monday that Telegram is closing the year with more than $500 million in cash reserves, excluding its crypto assets. He also noted significant progress in repaying the company’s $2 billion debt, taking advantage of favorable bond prices.
Telegram’s financial success has been fueled by innovations like Stars, Gifts, Giveaways, Mini Apps, the Affiliate Platform, Telegram Business, and Telegram Gateway. These features, Durov said, demonstrate that social media platforms can achieve financial sustainability while respecting user rights and maintaining independence.
Elon Musk, owner of X, was among the first to commend Durov on the achievement, responding to his announcement with a congratulatory “Well done.”
Despite its financial triumphs, Telegram faced scrutiny in 2024 for allegedly failing to curb extremist and illegal content. These accusations culminated in Durov’s arrest in France in August, where he faced charges related to inadequate content moderation.
Telegram has since intensified efforts to address harmful content, blocking 15.4 million groups and channels this year. According to its latest moderation report, the platform removes millions of pieces of content daily, including materials that incite violence, promote terrorism, or facilitate illegal activities.
With over 900 million users worldwide, Telegram continues to innovate while navigating challenges related to content regulation. Its financial achievements in 2024 underscore its potential as a major player in the tech industry, balancing profitability with social responsibility.
