The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission confirmed that Telegram and Tencent (WeChat) have initiated the licensing process to comply with Malaysia’s regulatory requirements.
“MCMC commends both Telegram and Tencent for their commitment to comply with the licensing requirements. Both platforms are expected to meet the necessary requirements to operate in Malaysia soon,” ot said in a statement.
The licensing requirement, effective 1 January 2025, aims to enhance online safety and strengthen regulatory oversight for internet messaging and social media service providers in Malaysia.
The framework is designed to create a trusted and safe online environment by requiring service providers to prioritize user protection, with a particular focus on safeguarding children and vulnerable groups.
This measure underscores the importance of responsible digital practices and accountability from platform operators.
“MCMC reminds all Service Providers meeting the conditions for licensing to submit their applications promptly before the 31 December 2024 deadline.
“Failure to do so may result in regulatory actions to be initiated, which all parties are keen to avoid. MCMC is committed to providing guidance and support to Service Providers to ensure a smooth application process,” added the statement. – December 26, 2024.
