Substack expands video tools, adds livestream clip sharing

Substack, the platform known for powering the newsletter economy, is doubling down on video with a fresh set of tools designed to help creators grow their audiences and promote livestream content more effectively.

In a major update announced Wednesday, Substack introduced new features that allow creators to share short clips from their livestreams directly on the platform’s Notes section.

The system will notify users in real time about how their clips are performing, helping them identify high-engagement moments worth sharing on external platforms like YouTube Shorts.

For creators who connect their YouTube accounts, Substack will automatically upload their top two performing clips to their Shorts channels — an effort to bridge discovery across platforms and drive traffic back to their Substack pages.

The features are currently rolling out on iOS, with Android support expected next week. Using artificial intelligence, Substack can automatically generate short highlight reels from longer livestream recordings, streamlining the clipping and sharing process.

To make promotion even easier, Substack will now generate ready-to-share marketing assets when users schedule a livestream. These assets can be posted across Substack’s Notes, YouTube, and other social media platforms, eliminating the need for time-consuming manual design.

Another addition — small but practical — is the ability to invite guests to livestreams via email or SMS. This means even those without Substack accounts can be easily included in live events.

The update builds on a string of recent enhancements to the platform’s video offerings. Earlier this year, Substack rolled out live video capabilities for all publishers, followed by the launch of audio-only livestreams and a TikTok-style scrollable video feed.

The latest improvements underscore Substack’s ambitions to grow beyond its newsletter roots and become a more robust multimedia publishing hub.
