State police bill scales second reading at House of Reps

The House of Representatives has successfully passed a bill on second reading that calls for the creation of state police.

According to The Times, with the support of 13 House members, the legislation passed the Green Chamber with a majority vote. Many lawmakers said that the nation’s continued security concerns outweighed their concerns about state governors being politically victimized.

Acting on behalf of Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, Kalu “urged members to put the security of Nigerians and the nation above personal goals at Tuesday’s plenary session of the House.

“The subject of state police has generated discussion since the Seventh National Assembly but has never succeeded in moving past the amendment stage.”

State governments are also pushing for groups like Amotekun and Ebube Agu to be allowed to use assault guns like AK-47s in order to fight armed attackers.

The 36 state governors and the federal government discussed the establishment of state police earlier last week as a means of addressing the nation’s escalating security issues.
