Starlink reopens internet kit orders in Nigeria

Starlink expands African footprint, enters Guinea-Bissau

Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has resumed new customer activations in Nigeria after expanding its network capacity and navigating a regulatory pause that halted orders late last year.

The company, which boasts over 60,000 subscribers in Nigeria, suspended sales of its residential internet kits in November 2024. At the time, prospective customers visiting its website were notified that activations were temporarily paused pending regulatory approval.

“Activation” refers to the process through which customers purchase, install, and connect Starlink’s satellite equipment—usually a dish—to access the company’s internet service. During the suspension, new users were unable to complete this setup and begin using the service.

With recent infrastructure upgrades, Starlink has now resumed activations and increased its bandwidth capacity, allowing it to accommodate more users, particularly in areas with high demand.

“This is a significant stride towards bridging the digital divide and revolutionising connectivity across the nation,” Nigeria’s third biggest internet service provider stated.

“The internet service provider has officially resumed activations for customers nationwide, with Lagos, Abuja, and other high-demand regions at the forefront of this exciting revival,” it added.

Starlink stated that the upgraded infrastructure is expected to deliver significantly faster speeds and enhanced connection stability for both residential and business users nationwide, with a focus on underserved and previously congested areas.

In response to the announcement, Konga, Starlink’s leading authorised retail partner in Nigeria, welcomed the development and reiterated its dedication to providing customers with smooth and reliable access to the service.

“To make the process even easier for Nigerians, we’re offering free nationwide delivery,” one of the country’s Konga said.

“Whether customers order online or walk into any of our retail outlets in cities like Asaba, Port Harcourt, Ikeja, Uyo, Owerri, Ibadan, FCT, Warri, Kano, Enugu, or Onitsha, their Starlink kits will be delivered at no extra cost.”

The companies described the resumption of activations as a game-changer for countless Nigerians who have been eager to access Starlink’s services since its launch in the country.
