Starlink raises hardware costs in Nigeria by 112%

Elon Musk’s internet service provider Starlink raised the cost of its technology by 112%.

Up until recently, the Starlink internet router was sold for N378,000; presently, it is offered for N800,000. The N38,000 monthly membership fee for the internet service is still in place according to The Times.

Starlink has not provided a reason for the increase, although it’s possible that it was impacted by the Naira’s depreciation vs the dollar.

Since the start of this year, the value of the Nigerian Naira has steadily decreased, from N907 to a dollar in December 2023 to N1,602 to a dollar as of March 7, 2024, at the official market.

When Starlink announced its arrival in Nigeria in January 2023, it aroused a lot of curiosity among Nigerians who were ready to switch service providers, despite its higher prices when compared to local ISPs.

Notwithstanding Starlink’s January announcement of its formal arrival in Nigeria, Nigerians have been placing pre-orders for its gear since 2022. When the firm made its formal announcement, it had switched from using dollars to naira, quoting costs for the gear as $600 and the membership as $43.
