Elon Musk’s satellite broadband company, Starlink, announced on Tuesday that it is complying with an order from Brazil’s top court to block access to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The order was issued by Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes.
In a post on X, Starlink confirmed that it has initiated legal proceedings in Brazil’s Supreme Court, arguing that the judge’s order is a “gross illegality.” The order not only mandates the blocking of X in Brazil but also freezes Starlink’s finances, preventing it from conducting financial transactions in the country.
“Despite the illegal treatment of Starlink, including the freezing of our assets, we are complying with the order to block access to X in Brazil,” the company stated in its X post. Starlink added that it continues to explore all legal avenues, along with others who believe the judge’s recent orders violate Brazil’s constitution.
This development follows Starlink’s initial refusal on Monday to comply with Moraes’ directive for all internet providers to block domestic access to X.
Tensions have escalated between Brazil and Musk’s business interests, as the country’s telecommunications regulator has now threatened to sanction Starlink. The move comes after Brazil’s top court upheld the controversial decision to ban the social network X nationwide.
