Starbucks workers’ union extends indefinite strike to over 120 stores

The Starbucks workers’ union is expanding an indefinite strike, now involving over 120 stores across 85 cities.

The action, which began on November 13 with 65 stores, is set to become the longest in the company’s history as workers demand better pay and increased staffing.

Workers launched strikes on Black Friday, one of the retail industry’s busiest days, to maximize their impact.

The walkouts hit Amazon warehouses in Germany, where employees are demanding a collective bargaining agreement, while separate protests were planned at Zara stores in Spain.

“It’s time for Brian Niccol and Starbucks executives to stop stalling and cut the excuses,” Michelle Eisen, Starbucks Workers United spokesperson, said.

Starbucks stated that 99 per cent of its more than 17,000 U.S. locations remain open.

“Regardless of the union’s plans, we do not anticipate any meaningful disruption. When the union is ready to return to the bargaining table, we’re ready to talk”, a spokesperson for Starbucks said.

The striking baristas are calling for higher wages, better schedules, and the resolution of hundreds of unfair labour practice charges related to union busting.
