Spotify unveils direct messaging to boost music, podcast sharing

Spotify launches custom transitions to enhance playlists

Spotify on Tuesday launched a new feature, Messages, enabling users to share music and podcasts directly within the app.

“Spotify users have told us they want a dedicated space within the app to share songs, podcasts or audiobooks they’re excited about with friends and family, and an easy way to keep track of recommendations,” a press release from Spotify read. “For artists, authors and creators, easier sharing means more word-of-mouth recommendations and helps create new fans.”

Spotify stated that adding direct messaging to its platform aims to boost word-of-mouth sharing, enhancing the experience for both fans and artists.

Spotify emphasized that its new Messages feature is not meant to replace existing sharing options—like sending a song via messages or posting a favorite podcast to Instagram Stories—but to complement them.

The feature is designed to keep users engaged on the platform while allowing friends and family to connect and interact there. It arrives amid Spotify’s broader push into video podcasting, deeper collaborations with platforms like Instagram, and new interactive features that let users DJ within the app.

The company also noted that Messages is just the start of upcoming innovations, hinting at more features planned in the coming months.
