Spotify has rolled out a new feature that allows subscribers to create more professional, DJ-style playlists with customizable transitions.
The update, announced Tuesday, introduces “Mix,” a tool that lets users automatically add transitions between tracks or manually adjust them using preset styles such as fade, rise, or blend.
To access the feature, subscribers can open any playlist and tap “Mix” from the toolbar. From there, they can fine-tune transition effects by adjusting volume, equalizer settings, and audio effects, while also using waveform and beat data to identify the smoothest point to switch between songs.
Spotify will also display each track’s key and beats per minute, making it easier for beginners to craft seamless transitions.
The company said the new feature is aimed at music fans and playlist creators, who have already built nearly nine billion playlists on its platform. The rollout builds on a series of recent updates designed to give users greater control over their listening experience, including playlist editing tools, Discover Weekly personalization, AI DJ voice requests, and track snoozing.
The move also positions Spotify against rival Apple Music, which is preparing to introduce a competing AutoMix function, currently available in beta testing.
Premium subscribers who use the new tool will be able to save and share mixed playlists on social media, or collaborate with friends to create joint mixes. The “Mix” mode can be turned on or off at any time, allowing playlists to switch back to their traditional format once the occasion ends.
Spotify recommends using the feature with genres like house and techno, which naturally lend themselves to seamless blending. Custom transitions are available now for most Premium users worldwide, with some Asia-Pacific markets set to follow soon.
