Spotify adds long-form magazine stories in bid to boost revenue

Spotify has expanded its push to become a comprehensive audio platform with the launch of narrated long-form magazine articles on its app, adding another monetisable content category alongside music, podcasts, and audiobooks.

The company announced on Tuesday that Premium subscribers will be able to access the narrated articles as part of their existing 15-hour monthly audiobook listening allowance, while free-tier users can purchase individual articles for $1.99 each.

Spotify said the rollout, which begins immediately, includes more than 650 English-language long-form articles sourced from major publications such as Rolling Stone, The Atlantic, Vogue, Variety, Billboard, Wired and Vanity Fair.

According to the company, the narrated content was produced internally by its audiobooks division and is designed to complement Spotify’s broader audio ecosystem, particularly its podcast and audiobook offerings.
Spotify also disclosed that the articles will feature a combination of human narration and AI-generated digital voice narration, with digitally narrated sections clearly identified to users.

The latest move underscores Spotify’s strategy to deepen user engagement by broadening listening habits beyond music streaming.

“By bringing shorter form content into the mix, we’re meeting audiences where they are to help build healthy listening habits, ultimately growing engagement with books over time,” noted Colleen Prendergast, licensing lead at Spotify Audiobooks, in a blog post about the launch.

The company believes exposure to narrated articles could encourage users to consume more long-form audio content, potentially driving higher audiobook adoption and improving monetisation opportunities within its platform.
