Spider-Man: Brand New Day has recorded the highest preview-night earnings in the history of the Nigerian box office, pulling in N120.4 million before its official nationwide release.
Data from Film Intelligence showed that the Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures superhero film broke the previous preview screening record, a sign of how strongly Hollywood franchise films continue to perform commercially in Nigeria.
The strong showing comes at a time when cinemas across the country are recording impressive turnout for big-budget titles. Industry projections suggest the film could rake in more than N500 million within its first five days in cinemas.
Despite Spider-Man’s record preview numbers, Nigerian box office figures show that The Odyssey remained the top-grossing film of the week. The Christopher Nolan epic added N63.6 million between Monday and Thursday, pushing its total earnings to N423.8 million after two weeks in cinemas.
Industry analysts, however, believe Spider-Man: Brand New Day will overtake The Odyssey once full weekend box office numbers are released.
Several other films also recorded notable earnings during the week. Nollywood romantic comedy Call of My Life pushed its cumulative earnings to N826.2 million, further cementing its status as the highest-grossing Nigerian film of 2026.
The Return of Omotara Johnson reached N97.4 million, while Moana closed the week with N95.9 million. Supergirl crossed N168 million, and Evil Dead Burn moved closer to the N50 million mark.
Spider-Man’s performance in Nigeria reflects its strong debut on the global stage.
In the United States, the film generated $72 million in preview ticket sales, the biggest domestic preview opening in Hollywood history, surpassing the record previously held by Avengers: Endgame. The film is expected to earn between $260 million and $280 million during its opening weekend in the US.
The simultaneous record-breaking performances recorded in Nigeria and the United States highlight the enduring box office pull of the Spider-Man franchise, as well as the rising importance of the Nigerian cinema market to major Hollywood studios.
Over the past year, the Nigerian box office has continued to post record-breaking numbers for Hollywood films, reflecting growing local appetite for blockbuster franchises. In July 2026, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey grossed N215.5 million in its opening week, placing it among the five biggest Hollywood debuts ever recorded in West Africa. The film went on to surpass N423 million within two weeks, establishing itself as one of the region’s highest-grossing international releases.
This followed a string of strong outings by major studio productions. In July 2025, Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four: First Steps crossed N100 million in its opening weekend in Nigeria and closed with N107.6 million after three days, making it the country’s biggest Hollywood debut of that year. The result underscored the continued appeal of superhero franchises to Nigerian cinema audiences, even amid weaker performances in some other international markets.
