Spanish police arrest ‘Mango’ billionaire’s son in possible homicide investigation

Jonathan Andic, the son of late Mango founder Isak Andic, has been arrested in Spain over the 2024 death of his billionaire father, in a case that authorities are now treating as a possible homicide.

AFP reported that the arrest was confirmed on Tuesday by the Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force, after investigators reopened the case earlier this year.

Isak Andic, who founded fashion giant Mango in 1984, died at the age of 71 after falling more than 100 metres (328 feet) into a ravine during a hiking trip near Barcelona in December 2024.

Jonathan Andic, who was the only witness to the incident, appeared before a court in Martorell on Tuesday.

According to the High Court of Justice of Catalonia, the judge granted him provisional release after he paid a €1 million bail and ordered him to surrender his passport and report to court weekly.

The case had initially been ruled an accident before being temporarily closed in early 2025.

However, Spanish authorities reopened the investigation in March after new evidence and alleged inconsistencies in Jonathan Andic’s statements emerged, prompting prosecutors to investigate the death as a possible homicide.

In a statement reported by Spanish media outlet Cadena SER, the Andic family strongly defended Jonathan’s innocence, insisting that “there are no and will not be any legitimate incriminating pieces of evidence” against him.

The family also called for respect for the principle of presumption of innocence.

Jonathan Andic’s lawyer, Cristóbal Martell, also rejected the allegations, describing the homicide theory as “inconsistent” and “painful,” adding: “Now the real process begins and the truth and innocence will shine through.”

Founded by Turkish-born businessman Isak Andic, Mango grew into one of Europe’s biggest fashion retailers, competing globally with brands such as Zara.

The company operates nearly 3,000 stores across more than 120 markets worldwide and recorded sales of €3.8 billion in 2025.

According to Forbes, Isak Andic had an estimated net worth of $4.5 billion at the time of his death.

Following his passing, Jonathan Andic and his sisters inherited a 95% stake in Mango, while chairman and CEO Toni Ruiz retained the remaining 5%, Reuters reported.
