Spain’s High Court has issued an order to suspend the messaging app Telegram’s services within the country following complaints from media companies regarding unauthorized content uploads by users, as per a court source.
Effective from Monday, the use of Telegram in Spain will undergo a temporary suspension following requests from media entities such as Atresmedia, EGEDA, Mediaset, and Telefonica.
Judge Santiago Pedraz has approved the blocking of Telegram’s services in Spain while investigations into the claims are underway. Mobile phone providers will be tasked with implementing the blockage of Telegram’s services, according to the court source.
According to the competition watchdog CNMC, Telegram ranks as the fourth most-utilized messaging service in Spain, with nearly 19% of Spaniards surveyed reporting its usage.
The company reports having over 700 million monthly active users worldwide as of 2023.
