The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has said it will sue the minister for works, David Umahi over the environmental and social impact assessment of the ongoing Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.
This was disclosed by SERAP via its official X handle on Thursday, issuing a freedom of information request against the minister.
SERAP requested Umahi to make public immediately, whether or not the assessment had taken place and a copy of any report on that assessment, alongside its date and location.
The Civil society group said it would drag the minister to court if the information is not made public immediately.
SERAP said “BREAKING: We’re issuing a freedom of information request against Senator David Umahi to immediately disclose if any environmental and social impact assessment was carried out on the Lagos – Calabar Coastal Highway Project, and to widely publish a copy of the report of any such assessment including the date and locations of the assessment. We’ll see in court if the information is not immediately provided.”
Recall a journalist had asked whether the project had received final approval from the Federal Ministry of Environment or if an exemption had been granted, At a press briefing on Wednesday.
Umahi in response said “We are following due process; it is the federal government that gives the approval not you. We have the approval,”
When further asked if the approval could be made public, “Everything in order,” Umahi said.
Umahi recently ordered the demolition of buildings along the federal government right-of-way for the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project.
