Samsung launches new foldable smartphones amid competition from Chinese rivals

Samsung blames US AI chip sanctions for profit slump, shares dip

Samsung on Wednesday unveiled three new foldable smartphones, including sleeker flagship models and a more affordable flip device, as the South Korean tech giant seeks to reclaim ground in the increasingly competitive global foldable market.

The refreshed lineup features the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which opens like a book, the Galaxy Z Flip 7, designed in a clamshell form factor, and a new budget-friendly variant, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 SE.

The launches signal Samsung’s renewed push to expand adoption of foldables and maintain its leadership in the premium smartphone segment.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 boasts significant hardware upgrades. It is thinner and lighter than its predecessor — measuring just 8.9 millimeters closed and 4.2 millimeters when open, and weighing 215 grams.

It features a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch main screen when unfolded. The device also packs a high-end camera system, including a 200-megapixel main lens, 10-megapixel telephoto, 12-megapixel ultra-wide, and dual 10-megapixel front cameras.

Samsung’s latest foldables arrive at a time when Chinese brands are rapidly gaining market share.

Honor, which spun off from Huawei in 2020, recently launched the ultra-thin Magic V5, while Oppo earlier this year released the Find N5, another slim foldable contender.

According to Counterpoint Research, Samsung’s share of the global foldable market declined to 45% in 2024, down from 54% a year earlier.

Of the 17.2 million foldable smartphones sold globally in 2024, just 9.4 million were outside mainland China, highlighting the growing dominance of Chinese manufacturers in the segment.

With the introduction of the new Galaxy Z series, Samsung is betting that improved specs, a broader price range, and refined designs will drive renewed interest and help it fend off challengers in one of the most dynamic corners of the smartphone market.
