A Russian court on Monday fined tech giant Google and messaging platform Discord for not complying with Russia’s demands to delete or restrict access to certain online content.
The fines were issued by the Tagansky District Court, which penalized both companies 3.5 million roubles ($37,675) each.
Google was fined for failing to remove content that Russian authorities have classified as illegal, while Discord was penalized for not restricting access to banned information.
The ruling is part of Russia’s ongoing efforts to enforce tighter controls on foreign tech companies operating within its borders. Over the past few years, Russia has consistently ordered tech platforms to take down content it deems unlawful, issuing fines when companies do not comply.
Google has faced increasing pressure in Russia, especially after the company blocked YouTube channels affiliated with Russian media and public figures following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
The fines represent the latest chapter in Russia’s broader push to control the digital landscape and regulate the flow of information within the country.
