Russia’s communications regulator has blocked the instant messaging platform Discord for allegedly violating Russian law, according to a report from TASS news agency on Tuesday.
This move makes the San Francisco-based company the latest foreign tech platform to face restrictions in Russia.
For several years, Russian authorities have mandated that foreign technology companies remove content they consider illegal, issuing regular fines for non-compliance.
Last week, the regulator, Roskomnadzor, ordered Discord to delete nearly 1,000 items deemed illegal and has previously fined the platform for failing to remove banned content.
This latest action follows Russia’s earlier restrictions on other major platforms, including the blocking of Twitter—now rebranded as X—and Meta Platforms’ Facebook and Instagram soon after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
