The House of Representatives Committee on Finance has proposed exempting military personnel in Nigeria from personal income tax.
The Chairman of the committee, Abiodun Faleke, announced this on Thursday during the review of four tax bills submitted by President Bola Tinubu in October 2024.
The proposal acknowledges the critical role of military personnel in national security but is still under legislative consideration.
Speaking at the event, Faleke said, “Mr Speaker, honourable colleagues, the committee proposed that personal income of military personnel should be exempted from tax. This is because of the critical nature of their assignment.”
The proposal received unanimous support from committee members, highlighting broad backing for the measure. If approved, the exemption would ease the financial burden on military personnel, recognizing the risks and sacrifices of their service to the nation.
On Thursday, the House began reviewing the report on the four tax bills submitted to the National Assembly by President Bola Tinubu in October 2024.
As of the time of this report, lawmakers had moved into the Committee of the Whole for a clause-by-clause consideration.
