Reddit and several major news publishers are reportedly considering restricting Google’s access to their websites as the tech giant’s AI-generated search summaries continue to raise concerns about declining referral traffic.

Reddit, which previously signed a $60 million-a-year agreement allowing Google to use content from its online forums to train artificial intelligence models, has reportedly become increasingly frustrated with the search giant’s practices and is weighing whether to continue the partnership, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter.

Other publishers, including USA Today, Politico, Reuters and The Economist, are also reconsidering their relationships with Google over its AI Overviews, which appear at the top of search results and provide generated answers instead of directing users to external websites.

Politico, owned by Axel Springer, has reportedly considered blocking Google and other bots from accessing its non-paywalled content, while Reuters is also weighing similar restrictions.

“We are certainly looking at the economic trade-offs between search and AI summaries,” Reuters President Paul Bascobert told the Journal.

Google, however, dismissed the criticism, saying publishers can opt out of having their content used to train its Gemini AI models without being removed from its search results.

The company said its AI-powered search features direct billions of clicks to websites each week, adding that its tools highlight links to external sources and give website owners controls over how their content is accessed.
