Reddit on Monday unveiled a contributor programme that pays users real money in exchange for their internet points.
Users who qualify can exchange their Reddit gold and karma for fiat money (not cryptocurrency), which is paid out once a month
.
Users who are over 18 and can prove their identity using Persona and Stripe are the only ones who can currently participate in the Reddit contributor programme. Only posts that are safe for work can be monetized, and accounts must have been active for longer than 30 days.
The amount of money a user can make depends on their Reddit karma, or the quantity of upvotes they have gotten.
Redditors must accumulate at least 10 gold within 30 days in order to withdraw funds; otherwise, the balance rolls over. Users will receive $0.90 for every 1 gold for those with between 100 and 4999 karma. You can get paid $1 per gold once you have accumulated more than 5000 karma.
Reddit’s payment program comes at a time when the platform is in turmoil because some of its user base is still hostile as a result of contentious API modifications that make it prohibitively expensive for many developers to build on Reddit.
Popular third-party apps including Sync, ReddPlanet, Apollo, and Reddit is Fun have all been discontinued as a result of these changes.
