Power crisis worsens as National grid collapses again

Nigeria experienced yet another national grid collapse on Wednesday, leaving many parts of the country without electricity.

The collapse occurred shortly after 11 a.m., leading to a significant drop in power generation. At 11 a.m., the grid was generating 4,064 megawatts, but this figure plummeted to 1,203MW by noon before dropping to zero by 1 p.m.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, Ndidi Mbah, were unsuccessful. However, she informed our correspondent that she was attending an event and could not respond at the time.

Sources within power generation companies confirmed the occurrence of a grid disturbance on Wednesday morning.

Reports indicate that the system tripped, causing a widespread blackout before midday.

This marks the first grid collapse of 2025, following a similar incident in January.

The national grid recorded 12 collapses in 2024 and over 100 disruptions in the past decade.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company acknowledged the development in a statement posted on its X account.

“Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 a.m. today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas. While gradual restoration has commenced, we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilized. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to serve you better.”

As of press time, efforts were ongoing to restore power across affected regions.
