The Nigerian Ports Consultative Council’s plan to establish a database for port industry statistics is aimed at creating a centralized repository for historical data and aiding industry forecasts.
This initiative is expected to enhance data-driven decision-making and improve efficiency in the Nigerian port sector.
According to a statement on Wednesday, NPCC leadership discussed this goal recently when the council inaugurated five new committees charged with developing actionable ideas for growing Nigeria’s port industry.
The NPCC Chairman, Mr. Bolaji Sunmola, stated that the proposed database would assist industry operators, regulators, and the government in effectively “planning for investments, policy adjustments, and infrastructure within the sector.”
Sunmola expressed confidence that the NPCC could become the primary custodian of port statistics, emphasizing the importance of strong collaboration with government regulatory agencies and stakeholders at the seaports.
Also speaking, the Vice Chairman of NPCC, Mrs. Jean Chiazor Anishere, noted that the NPCC committees are expected to create a work plan aligned with their specific terms of reference.
This approach ensures that each committee’s efforts are focused on actionable and relevant tasks to drive the growth of Nigeria’s port industry.
She assured the gathering that the NPCC would fully support the respective committees in their efforts, emphasizing the council’s commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of their initiatives for the development of Nigeria’s port industry.
Speaking on behalf of the newly inaugurated committees, the Chairman of Port Operations and Logistics, Capt. Iheanacho Ebubeogu, highlighted that an assessment of Nigeria’s seaports could be categorized into two main areas: port operations and human activities.
He emphasized that a clear understanding of port operations and human activities is crucial for planning the sector’s growth and evaluating the performance of operators, agencies, and stakeholders.
