The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arraignment of Abiola Odutayo in connection with the death of Adetunji Opayele, co-founder of Bumpa, popularly known as Teejay.
Opayele, 32, lost his life in a tragic road accident on March 4, 2025, an incident that has sparked widespread public concern.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, Odutayo was arraigned on March 12, 2025, at Court 1, Tinubu, following her discharge from the hospital. She faces charges of reckless and careless driving on a public highway, which resulted in Opayele’s death.
“The Lagos State Police Command acknowledges public concerns regarding the tragic accident that claimed the life of Adetunji Opayele (Teejay). We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who have been affected by this loss,” the statement read.
It further confirmed that “following a thorough investigation, Abiola Odutayo was arraigned for driving on a public highway in a reckless and careless manner, without due care and attention to other road users, thereby causing the death of Opayele.”
The court granted Odutayo bail and adjourned the case until April 16, 2025. The police reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring transparency, fairness, and justice in the matter.
Public outrage continues to mount over Opayele’s death, with reports alleging that Odutayo failed to yield or assist the critically injured victim, citing concerns about staining her vehicle. Witnesses also claimed that bystanders struggled to secure medical help as multiple hospitals reportedly refused to treat Opayele.l
In response, over 35,000 Nigerians have signed a petition demanding justice, with many calling for more severe charges, including manslaughter, rather than reckless driving. Petitioners have urged the Lagos State Ministry of Justice to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure appropriate prosecution.
The case continues to draw attention as the legal process unfolds, with calls for stricter measures against reckless driving and improved emergency response systems in Lagos.
