Plateau seals two restaurants over poor sanitation

Plateau Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency has sealed two restaurants in Jos for poor sanitary conditions and unkempt surroundings.

The enforcement action took place on Saturday during the agency’s routine monthly environmental sanitation exercise, led by the Director General, Samuel Nathaniel Dapiya.

The affected restaurants, located in the Old Airport area of Jos, were found operating in violation of basic hygiene and environmental standards.

The state team inspectors observed inadequate waste management, poorly maintained surroundings, and overall unhygienic conditions, posing serious risks to public health and food safety.

The officials also discovered a minor working at one of the restaurants, and the matter has been referred to the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Caroline Panglang Dafur, for investigation and necessary action regarding potential child labour violations.

Dapiya emphasised that the sealing forms part of PEPSA’s ongoing efforts to safeguard public health, promote environmental sustainability, and enforce compliance with sanitation regulations.

The agency has previously clamped down on similar violations at abattoirs and other food outlets in Jos.

The restaurants will remain closed until the owners address all identified issues and meet the required standards for reopening, PEPSA Boss added.

They urged food business operators and hospitality sector stakeholders to uphold high standards of cleanliness and adhere strictly to state regulations to avoid sanctions.
