The Plateau State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Railway Corporation to reopen and operate the long-dormant Jos–Kuru rail corridor in a major move to revitalize transport infrastructure and boost economic activity.

The agreement, reported by the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday, is poised to enhance regional mobility and trade across Plateau and neighbouring states. It was formalized by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang—represented by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Jatau Davou—and the Managing Director of NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa.

According to the state government, the project is expected to reduce transportation costs and improve cargo movement, particularly for farmers and small-scale traders. The Jos–Kuru line is part of the historic Kafanchan–Kuru route and is strategically positioned to connect Nigeria’s Western and Eastern rail corridors, bringing improved access to rural and underserved communities.

“This milestone aims to boost economic activity, reduce transport costs, and enhance mobility in Plateau and neighbouring areas,” the statement read.

Initially, the restored train services will operate on a narrow-gauge track. However, long-term plans are in place to upgrade the line to standard gauge as part of Nigeria’s ongoing national rail modernization programme. While no specific timeline has been given for the upgrade, officials stressed that the goal is to align the corridor with modern railway standards.

Speaking at the signing, NRC Managing Director Dr. Opeifa commended the Plateau State Government’s commitment to restoring disused rail infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of strong federal–state partnerships in driving infrastructure development.

“This partnership shows how governments can rise above politics to deliver real benefits to Nigerians,” Opeifa stated. “We are not just returning trains; we are restoring dignity, economic power, and national unity.”

He revealed that a dedicated business manager will be deployed to Plateau State to oversee operations and ensure efficient service delivery. Beyond transportation, the revived rail corridor is also expected to generate local employment, support small businesses, and unlock new opportunities in advertising, entertainment, and logistics.

Opeifa also reiterated the NRC’s broader commitment to rail expansion nationwide, noting that similar projects are underway in regions including Borno, Aba, and Port Harcourt.
