South Africa’s apex bank, South African Reserve Bank, has unveiled new designs for the country’s legal tender.
This was during the launch event held on Wednesday at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg.
The Reserve Bank governor, Lesetja Kganyago, disclosed the new rand notes and coins will have enhanced security features to prevent counterfeiting.
The new notes come with colour-changing ink, and large watermarks that have Africa’s five biggest animals.
There was Rhino on the R10 note, an elephant on the R20, a lion on the R50, buffalo on the R100, and a leopard on the R200.
The physically impaired were also considered as there were numerals and unique shapes printed in positive and negative ink on the currencies.
Unlike Nigeria ran a haphazard currency redesign, and phase out old notes in one swoop, South Africa plans to keep the new and old notes in circulation.
