Photo editing platform VSCO launches new camera app 'Capture' globally

The popular photo editing and sharing app, VSCO, has expanded the global availability of its new iOS camera app, Capture, following a limited release last month in Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

Capture is the company’s first standalone app in over a decade and is designed to help users shoot photos with a distinct aesthetic. It features over 50 image presets, real-time effects, and manual controls for shutter speed and exposure. The app supports RAW and ProRAW formats and allows automatic syncing of photos to VSCO’s cloud.

In a move to deepen its support for professional and aspiring photographers, VSCO also announced the acquisition of The Freelance Photographer, an educational platform that offers a combination of online and in-person workshops focused on photography and videography.

“There’s a clear gap in the market for business education and industry-specific guidance for emerging photography professionals,” said VSCO CEO Eric Wittman in a statement. “The Freelance Photographer serves as a long-term career partner to creatives, offering education, community, and tools to turn their craft into a career.”

The platform offers subscription-based coaching, starting at $208 per month for basic plans, and going up to $625 per month for full access to over 50 tools, multiple courses, and personal mentoring from founder Paul Weaver.

The acquisition complements VSCO’s recent strategy to serve creative professionals. In the past year, the company launched several initiatives: VSCO Hub, which connects photographers with brands; VSCO Sites, a tool for building portfolio web pages; and VSCO Canvas, a collaborative whiteboard for visual project planning.

With Capture’s global debut and the integration of educational services, VSCO is positioning itself as a one-stop platform for both hobbyists and career photographers.
