Perplexity AI partners PayPal to enable payments via chat

Artificial intelligence startup Perplexity AI has announced a new partnership with payments giant PayPal, allowing users to make direct purchases within its chat interface.

The integration, revealed on Wednesday, will roll out in the United States this summer.

The collaboration is expected to bolster Perplexity’s push into agentic commerce— a fast-growing sector where AI not only recommends products and services but also completes transactions on behalf of users. Under the new system, customers using Perplexity Pro will be able to search for products, book travel, or purchase event tickets, and complete transactions instantly through PayPal or Venmo.

According to the company, the entire purchasing process — from payment authorization to invoicing — will take place behind the scenes using PayPal’s account-linking technology. This could eliminate the need for traditional logins and passwords, enabling users to complete purchases with just a single query or click.

The deal also opens the door for Perplexity to tap into PayPal’s global network of over 430 million active accounts across nearly 200 countries, significantly expanding the reach of its commerce capabilities.

Perplexity, often compared to AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, delivers real-time answers by searching the web. The company is backed by notable investors including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Nvidia, and SoftBank.

In a related development, The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that Perplexity is in advanced talks to raise \$500 million in a new funding round, which would value the startup at $14 billion.
