OpenAI on Tuesday unveiled ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser designed to compete with Google and Perplexity.
According to the company, Atlas offers a familiar browsing experience but is fully integrated with ChatGPT, allowing users to generate summaries, ask questions, and perform tasks directly while browsing any webpage.
“We think that AI represents a rare once-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be about,” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said during a livestream on Tuesday.
The launch of Atlas positions OpenAI in direct competition with rivals such as Google and Perplexity AI, as all three race to attract users and capture market share with their respective AI-driven browsers.
Earlier this month, Perplexity introduced its Comet browser for free, while Google integrated its Gemini AI model into the Chrome browser in September.
Atlas features an “Ask ChatGPT” button at the top right corner of every webpage, which opens the chatbot in a companion sidebar when clicked.
OpenAI’s product lead for Atlas, Adam Fry, said during a livestream that the integration allows ChatGPT to follow users across the web, eliminating the need to copy and paste content between tabs.
