OpenAI unveils $100 ChatGPT subscription plan amid rising demand

OpenAI employees consider selling $6bn stock

OpenAI has introduced a new $100-per-month subscription tier for ChatGPT, filling a long-standing gap in its pricing structure as demand grows for more advanced usage options.

Until now, its pricing structure included a free tier (now ad-supported), an $8-per-month Go plan (also with ads), a $20-per-month Plus plan (ad-free), and a top-end $200-per-month Pro plan, also ad-free.

The new $100 option offers a balanced alternative for users who require greater capacity and features without opting for the highest-priced tier.

The $100 Pro plan will provide five times more Codex usage than the Plus plan, significantly expanding capacity for power users.

OpenAI has made it clear that the new pricing tier is also aimed at competing directly with Anthropic, which has long offered a $100-per-month subscription for Claude, according to TechCrunch.

“The new $100 Pro Tier is designed to give developers more practical coding capacity for the money, especially during high-intensity work sessions where limits matter most. Compared with Claude Code, Codex delivers more coding capacity per dollar across paid tiers, with the difference showing up most clearly during active coding use,” an OpenAI spokesperson stated.

The spokesperson also said that more than 3 million people worldwide now use Codex each week—an increase of 5x over the past three months—with usage growing by more than 70 per cent month over month.
