OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is set to unveil updates to its flagship chatbot, powered by its most advanced AI model, GPT-4. CEO Sam Altman described GPT-4 as “feeling like magic” during an announcement on X last Friday.
The company announced on X that it will host a livestream conference on Monday to showcase some of the updates to ChatGPT and GPT-4.
Earlier reports suggested that OpenAI was planning to announce an AI-powered search product on Monday, ahead of Google’s I/O developers conference.
However, the search product announcement has been delayed, according to sources familiar with the matter. Altman clarified on X that the announcement would not be about GPT-5 or a search engine, but rather something new that they believe people will love.
OpenAI faces pressure to expand the user base of ChatGPT, which has impressed users with its ability to generate human-like written content and high-quality software code.
Although ChatGPT saw rapid growth after its launch in late 2022, website traffic has fluctuated over the past year, only recently returning to its peak in May 2023, according to analytics firm Similarweb.
Experts believe that giving ChatGPT the ability to access real-time, accurate web information, akin to a search engine, is a natural progression. This capability is currently lacking in the current version of ChatGPT and would put OpenAI in competition with Google, which has announced similar features for its search engine, as well as startup Perplexity.
However, integrating real-time information into ChatGPT has proven challenging. An earlier attempt called ChatGPT plugins was retired in April, as indicated by a help center posting on OpenAI’s website.
