OpenAI on Monday declared that it would defend the users of its products if they are accused of copyright infringement with reference to OpenAI apps and services.
OpenAI claims that as part of a new initiative called Copyright Shield, it will cover customers’ legal expenses as long as they use ChatGPT Enterprise and OpenAI’s developer platform’s “generally available” features.
It appears that not all OpenAI products are covered by the protections, such as ChatGPT’s free and Plus tiers.
“OpenAI is committed to protecting our customers with built-in copyright safeguards in our systems,” OpenAI wrote in a blog post.
Some providers of generative AI tools have promised to protect users of their products against copyright lawsuits, both monetarily and otherwise. Some have released guidelines to protect themselves from responsibility, so clients are responsible for paying the attorneys’ fees.
Several companies, including Adobe, Getty Images, Amazon, Microsoft, IBM, and Shutterstock, have made it clear that they will defend generative AI clients against IP rights lawsuits.
