OpenAI rolls out visual display ads on ChatGPT

OpenAI is introducing visual display ads to its advertising offering, allowing ads to appear alongside images generated by ChatGPT in response to user requests.

The company is also expanding its ad measurement tools and partnerships while developing new methods to assess brand suitability.

The new ads are expected to launch later this month, initially in the United States, featuring products and services from a select group of advertisers participating in the first test.

OpenAI said the ads will be clearly labelled and will not influence the answers generated by ChatGPT.

The move follows Meta’s launch of Muse, a free agentic AI app that is emerging as a competitor to leading AI chatbots such as ChatGPT.

OpenAI introduced advertising earlier this year as part of efforts to support its free and lower-cost subscription tiers, before expanding the programme to India in August.

The company is now targeting online advertisers seeking to engage potential customers through more visual storytelling.

The ads could eventually reach ChatGPT’s 1.2 billion weekly users as OpenAI expands the advertising programme globally.
