OpenAI revamps ChatGPT with enhanced product discovery, comparison tools

OpenAI unveils GPT-5 amid rising industry investment

OpenAI is introducing a new shopping experience inside OpenAI’s ChatGPT aimed at helping users more easily discover and compare products, following limited traction from its Instant Checkout feature.

The company said on Tuesday that users will be able to search for items by uploading images or describing what they want, while also adding details such as budget, preferences, and other constraints. ChatGPT will then return more visual, comparison-focused results to help users evaluate different product options.

“Under the hood, we’ve improved speed, relevance, and product coverage — so results are more up-to-date and more useful,” OpenAI said in a blog post.

The update follows OpenAI’s decision to move away from Instant Checkout, a feature that let users buy selected products directly within OpenAI’s ChatGPT from retailers such as Etsy, Walmart, and Shopify.

OpenAI introduced the feature last year, describing it as a major step toward AI-powered commerce and in-chat purchasing.

OpenAI said merchants can now submit product feeds and promotions to the company, allowing their products to be fully represented within OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Retailers such as Target, Sephora and Nordstrom already support the new product discovery experience.

The company added that merchants seeking deeper integration can also build custom apps inside ChatGPT.

OpenAI first introduced the feature at its annual developer conference in October and has since expanded retail apps from partners including Instacart, Target and others over the past year.
