OpenAI partners Shopify, to launch ChatGPT shopping feature

OpenAI makes ChatGPT free, expands access without sign-ups

OpenAI is developing a checkout system for ChatGPT that will allow users to complete purchases directly within the chatbot, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

The move marks a significant step toward monetizing the platform’s massive user base beyond subscriptions.

Under the proposed system, merchants fulfilling orders through the integrated payment tool would pay a commission to OpenAI, creating a new revenue stream for the company. The feature is still in development, but OpenAI has reportedly been demonstrating early versions of the tool to brands, in collaboration with partners including e-commerce platform Shopify

Earlier this year, the two companies announced a partnership following the launch of an enhanced shopping feature in ChatGPT designed to improve how products and reviews are displayed. Currently, product suggestions in ChatGPT link out to external retailer websites, but the new checkout feature would streamline that process, keeping transactions within the app.

The initiative could help OpenAI diversify its income as it continues to grow rapidly. The Sam Altman-led company said its annualized revenue run rate hit $10 billion in June 2025—up from $5.5 billion at the end of 2024—despite reporting a loss of approximately $5 billion last year.
