OpenAI executives are considering a higher subscription fees for their forthcoming large language models, including the reasoning-focused “Strawberry” and a new flagship model called “Orion,” according to a report by The Information on Thursday.
Internal discussions at OpenAI have broached the possibility of subscription costs reaching up to $2,000 per month, as reported by a source familiar with the matter. OpenAI has yet to respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
Currently, the ChatGPT Plus subscription is priced at $20 per month, with a free tier that attracts hundreds of millions of users each month.
OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, is also developing a project known as “Strawberry,” which aims to enhance AI models’ capabilities for in-depth research. This involves a specialized “post-training” process designed to refine the models’ performance based on specific tasks after their initial training.
The speculation about increased pricing comes amidst reports that major tech players, including Apple and Nvidia, are in talks to invest in OpenAI as part of a new funding round. This investment could potentially value the AI company at over $100 billion.
Last week, OpenAI revealed that ChatGPT now boasts over 200 million weekly active users, marking a significant increase from the numbers reported last fall.
