Tech giants OpenAI and Meta Platforms have separately held discussions with India’s Reliance Industries about potential partnerships to expand their artificial intelligence presence in the country, technology news website The Information reported on Saturday.
One proposal under consideration involves a partnership between Reliance Jio and OpenAI to distribute ChatGPT, according to the report, which cited sources familiar with the matter.
Additionally, OpenAI is reportedly exploring the possibility of reducing ChatGPT’s subscription fee from $20 a month to a few dollars. However, it remains unclear whether this pricing strategy has been discussed with Reliance.
The report also stated that Reliance has explored the idea of offering OpenAI’s AI models to its enterprise clients via an application programming interface. The conglomerate, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, is also considering hosting and running OpenAI models locally—an approach that would keep Indian customer data within the country.
Further discussions include plans for Reliance to run Meta and OpenAI’s AI models in a massive three-gigawatt data center the company plans to build in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Reliance has described this upcoming facility as the world’s largest data center.
Reliance Industries is one of India’s largest conglomerates, with operations spanning petrochemicals, refining, oil and gas exploration, telecommunications, retail, and green energy.
