OpenAI, a leading force in generative artificial intelligence, launched a new AI tool on Sunday called “Deep Research,” designed to conduct multi-step investigations on the internet for complex tasks.
Powered by an optimized version of OpenAI’s upcoming o3 model, Deep Research enhances web browsing and data analysis capabilities. Users provide a prompt, and OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, scours multiple online sources—including text, images, and PDFs—synthesizing information into a comprehensive report at a research analyst level.
“It accomplishes in tens of minutes what would take a human many hours,” OpenAI stated.
Despite its advanced capabilities, OpenAI acknowledged that Deep Research remains in its early stages and has limitations. “It may struggle with distinguishing authoritative information from rumors and currently shows weakness in confidence calibration, often failing to convey uncertainty accurately,” the company said.
Deep Research was made available on Sunday via the web version of ChatGPT, with OpenAI planning to extend its rollout to mobile and desktop applications by the end of February.
Deep Research is the second AI agent launched by OpenAI this year. In January, the company introduced Operator, a tool designed to assist users with everyday tasks such as organizing to-do lists and planning vacations.
