Amid growing global competition in artificial intelligence, OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Gov, a specialized version of its AI-powered chatbot platform designed exclusively for U.S. government agencies.
Building on the capabilities of ChatGPT Enterprise, the government-focused platform allows agencies to deploy OpenAI’s models on Microsoft Azure’s commercial or government cloud infrastructure. This setup offers enhanced control over security, privacy, and compliance, facilitating the use of OpenAI’s tools for handling sensitive, non-public data.
OpenAI highlighted that ChatGPT Gov aims to streamline operations and simplify internal authorization processes for adopting AI technology within government workflows. The company claims its tools are already in widespread use, with more than 90,000 users across 3,500 federal, state, and local government agencies reportedly exchanging over 18 million messages on ChatGPT since 2024.
The launch comes during a week when China’s advancements in AI have dominated global headlines, underscoring the competitive race to integrate AI into key sectors, including governance.
