OpenAI expands image generator access to all users

OpenAI is facing ongoing capacity challenges following the launch of its viral image generation feature last week, as a result, the company has temporarily disabled video generation for new users of Sora, its suite of generative AI media tools.

“We’re currently experiencing heavy traffic and have temporarily disabled Sora video generation for new accounts,” OpenAI stated on its support page. “If you’ve never logged into Sora before, you can still generate images with Sora.”

OpenAI’s latest image generation capabilities have drawn widespread attention for their ability to replicate artistic styles, including Studio Ghibli’s distinctive hand-drawn animation. However, the surge in demand has strained the company’s infrastructure.

Over the weekend, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged on social media platform X that the company has been struggling to keep up with demand. He noted that staff have worked late nights and through the weekend to maintain service stability.

While OpenAI has not provided a timeline for when video generation will be reinstated for new users, the company is actively working to scale its systems to accommodate growing demand.
